[Kise drops the bag so he can take the branch from Nova and dig it into the sand. There's a small breeze here on the beach so their wishes and decorations are slowly swaying. The wolf dashes over to Midorima, expectantly waiting for Merlin to be released, but then rushing back to Kise, as if he can't decide where he wants to be.
Or maybe he's just implying Midorima should hurry up to Kise's side.]
Yup! In the store! [Kise pulls out something that looks like a tube, not bigger than his forearm, very colorful.] It's not as big as the real festival fireworks BUT! This thing shoots out small lights up in the air, like ten, twenty feet up! I also got us bigger sarklers!
[They are colorful too!
Pulling his pants legs up, Kise crouches in the sand, to dig out a small hole for the tube, then shoves it in so it can't move. Then adds the second one a little further away from it. When he's done, he gets up and gives Midorima one of those long, stick lighters, so he doesn't get in the way of explosions.]
[ Midorima takes his time. He's not running, Nova, get over it. Merlin obviously wants down too, but Midorima isn't relenting. Once he's caught up, he stares at the branch where it's standing and swaying, then looking at the fireworks.
It really is like a holiday. Maybe not exactly like Tanabata, but it's definitely a feature that reminds him of home. It's nice.
Kise will witness a very small smile pulling at the corner of his lips. He doesn't let Merlin down though, the fireworks are going to scare the hell out of him. ]
Hold this. Don't set him down.
[ He knows Nova is there, but he doesn't want Merlin hurting himself if he tries to escape or panics. He's safer in Kise's arms, where Midorima is placing him now. The smile is gone at that point, but he does want to light the fireworks. Merlin will survive as long as Kise holds on and comforts him.
Midorima goes up to light one, then runs to get back out of the way. ]
[This is, perhaps, the first time he's actually seen the guy smile. Kise's stunned for a split second, but then Merlin is given to him and Kise wholeheartedly accepts him, tucking him in his arms and taking a step back.
Maybe hiding a small smile behind all the fluff that the dog has.
He makes sure they are on a good distance so that no one gets hurt- Nova is by his leg, looking up at Kise and Merlin, and the blond grins when Midorima comes back rushing to them as he sets off the first one. He's just in time to see the first fly off in the air and burst into colorful sprinkles of red, followed by green one, then blue, then white.]
Heyy! It worked!
[He was afraid that they were on cheaper side and that they would flunk, but! It didn't!]
[ Midorima smiles more easily now than he used to. It used to be something that started happening when he was playing basketball, then every now and then a rare smile hidden behind a can of red bean soup or a smirk when Takao pulled out extra tape for him when he ran out. There are few things that bring it out of him, but every once in a while, someone will do something that makes it come out without him thinking, maybe without him even realizing he does it. It's easier now than it was at the start of high school, when he didn't think he remembered how to. Much easier, even if it's still a rare sight.
Merlin has somehow backed up within his fluff in Kise's arms that his fur is covering his face, of course, because what the fuck is a firework it's scary and loud. Midorima, however, is quietly watching the sparkling lights, visible in a reflection on his glasses. He doesn't yell loudly like Kise does, but he looks content to watch them.
[Kise coos at Merlin when he gets scared of the fireworks, but luckily he doesn't try anything more dramatic, while Nova is weaving between Midorima and Kise, not scared but as if on alert as if something bad is happening. But without Kise reacting badly to it, he finally settles by Midorima's leg.
And Kise is happy to see it, no matter how brief it is, that smile. Because he did something to draw it out and honestly, it's the best thing that happened in the last month. Midorima looks genuinely happy and relaxed, watching the small light show and it's the actual gift he wanted to give him today.
He's trying to pay attention to the fireworks, but his attention keeps being dragged over to Midorima. And before he gets caught staring-]
There's one more. That is just only one, but really big one.
[ Midorima gives Nova a few quick ear scratches as if to assure him that this is fine. Nothing bad is happening. With Kise holding Merlin so Midorima could light the fireworks, he takes on comforting Nova, who is a far cry more calm. Kise's voice brings him back to ground-level instead of the skies, watching the fireworks explode like stars above them, and he looks over back at him. ]
You didn't get something dangerous, did you?
[ Midorima doesn't want to blow his fingers off pls. ]
[Nova's ears happily twitch and he gives Midorima's hand a lick, but he's otherwise calm. In then "if this goes off and becomes dangerous I'm on it" type of calm. He was watching weird show quite intently as if looking for trouble.
Kise shakes his head,]
Nope! It's the same, only a bit bigger! We can't really have Grand Finale, but this should be a nice icing on cake.
[His fingers will remain intact! It's the same as with the previous one.]
[ In that case, Midorima gives Kise a final look and wipes his licked hand on Nova's head (lick is wet..) in a sneaky pet to return his saliva to him, thanks. ]
Set it up.
[ And Midorima will follow suit with the lighting once he does. ]
[Nova doesn't seem to notice or mind. Kise hands over Merlin for a moment so he can dig the tube in the sand, like the previous one. Who knows, it could jump off and hit them, not risking it.
Once he's done and sure that the tube won't go flying, he comes back and takes Merlin from Midorima.]
The finale!
[He grins and steps back again, making sure to cover up the pup when it goes off.]
[ Once it's off, Midorima returns and stands closer to Kise this time. Enough that he can give Merlin a little reassuring head scratch and probably get some chroma from being shoulder-to-shoulder with Kise. It's not a lot, but it's closer than Midorima normally gets without someone else instigating it.
As the firework explodes above them, he pushes his glasses up so that he can see it a little better. ]
Happy Tanabata, Kise.
[ And happy birthday to Midorima, but he's not gonna say that to Kise. ]
[Midorima gets a happy smile when he rushes over and steps close to him. Merlin, still a bit scared, is relieved Midorima's still around and tries to lick his hand. Sorry, Midorima, the pups just love to lick your hand.
He nudges Midorima's shoulder lightly, playfully when the firework goes off and he grins.]
And happy birthday to Midorimacchi!
[No need to worry, Kise will say it, he didn't forget.]
[ Midorima looks a little surprpised as he's nudged and looks over at Kise. It's nowhere near as rough as they are with him at Shutoku but it's still surprising.
To be fair, Midorima's always behaved more responsibly around the other Generation of Miracles members. His behavior around Shutoku is like a rebellion against being a responsible Vice Captain anymore and just acting like a spoiled child, so there's definitely a reason he gets smacked sometimes.
This seems more playful so he doesn't get upset about it and instead just lightly bumps Kise back. ]
[Kise doesn't mind 'either' versions of Midorima because he considers both of them to be true. One person can't always be serious and responsible for everything without having some leeway to cool off and relax. In fact, Kise's the one that needs to reign himself in a little. He's working on it!
Whether he gets smacked in Shutoku or no, Kise has no idea, but he definitively looks happier there. And that's pretty much all that matters.
He's tempted to lean his head against Midorima's shoulder but, well, public. So he just opts to stand there with a wide smile to watch the sunset with him.]
[ Kise may still struggle with his temptations, but it should be noted that Midorima does notice improvements in respecting his boundaries in public, which is why Midorima is trying to be a little more accommodating and affectionate in ways that he does feel comfortable, like shoulder bumps and hand holding. They're small, but Midorima really is putting in effort to try to meet him halfway. He certainly isn't bumping shoulders with anyone else.
Midorima is fine with just standing here quietly even after the firework has faded and enjoying the company of Kise and their dogs, honestly. ]
